WHY TESLA OWNERS CHOOSE US

Tesla's single-stage water-based paint is softer and thinner than most manufacturers. It scratches easily, shows swirl marks quickly, and requires a gentler approach to correction. Our technicians use paint depth gauges on every Tesla to ensure safe polishing without burning through the thin clear coat. Ceramic coating is especially recommended — it adds a protective layer that the factory paint desperately needs.

Tesla Paint Characteristics

Tesla uses a single-stage water-based paint system that is notoriously soft — typically 80-100 microns total thickness vs 120-150 for German cars. This means every touch matters. Drive-through washes will destroy a Tesla's finish in months. Our hand wash technique and ceramic coating recommendations are specifically calibrated for Tesla's unique paint characteristics.

TESLA OWNERSHIP IN SAN DIEGO

Tesla is the #1 new car brand registered in San Diego County as of 2025, with over 48,000 Teslas on local roads. Model Y dominates at 58% of San Diego Tesla registrations, followed by Model 3 at 31%. The highest concentration sits in Carmel Valley, Del Mar, and La Jolla — neighborhoods where charging infrastructure is well-established and household incomes support the purchase. Sorrento Valley and UTC office parks have the densest weekday Tesla population, making them prime spots for our mobile detailing during work hours. The Fremont factory paint (pre-2024) is measurably thinner than the Austin factory paint — we check VIN prefixes to determine factory of origin before correction.

DETAILING SERVICES FOR TESLA

For new Teslas (under 6 months): Skip paint correction entirely. The paint is thin enough that even light correction removes valuable clearcoat. Instead, go straight to ceramic coating ($450–$1,600) to protect the factory finish before swirl marks accumulate. For 1–3 year old Teslas: Stage 1 correction ($300+) addresses the inevitable swirl marks from automated washes and improper drying, followed by ceramic coating. For neglected Teslas (3+ years, never corrected): Stage 2 correction ($600+) is usually necessary. We measure paint depth on every panel — Tesla factory paint varies up to 20 microns between panels, meaning some areas can handle more aggressive correction than others. For all Teslas: Our Basic Exterior wash ($80) uses a Tesla-specific protocol — touchless pre-rinse, foam cannon, lamb’s wool mitt (never microfiber on dry Tesla paint), and filtered-water rinse to prevent water spots on the notoriously spot-prone dark colors.

COMMON TESLA ISSUES IN SAN DIEGO

The three most common Tesla paint issues we see in San Diego are: (1) Swirl marks from automatic car washes — Tesla’s soft paint shows swirls after just 2–3 wash cycles through a brush wash. We estimate 80% of Teslas over one year old in San Diego have moderate swirl damage. (2) Orange peel from factory — Tesla’s paint application process leaves more visible orange peel texture than European manufacturers. Wet sanding removes this but requires expert hands on paint this thin. (3) Water spot etching — San Diego’s hard water (250–350 ppm in most neighborhoods) leaves mineral deposits that etch into Tesla’s soft clearcoat within hours of drying. Black, dark blue, and midnight silver Teslas show this damage most visibly. Our ceramic coating’s hydrophobic properties shed water before spots form.

WHAT TESLA OWNERS SAY

starstarstarstarstar

"My Model Y's paint was covered in swirl marks after just one year. Stage 2 correction brought it back to showroom condition. Added the 3-year ceramic and it still beads water perfectly six months later. These guys know Tesla paint."

"Had my white Model Y ceramic coated the week I took delivery. Eleven months later, it still looks like the day I picked it up. Bird droppings, tree sap — everything wipes off with a damp cloth. Best decision for a new Tesla."

"My midnight silver Model 3 was a swirl mark nightmare after two years of drive-through washes. Stage 2 correction took a full day but the transformation was unreal. Under their LED lights the difference was night and day."

TESLA DETAILING FAQ

Is Tesla paint really different from other cars? expand_more
Yes. Tesla uses a water-based single-stage paint that is significantly softer and thinner than traditional automotive paint. It scratches more easily, shows swirl marks faster, and requires specialized polishing compounds and lower pressure. Our technicians measure paint depth before every correction to ensure safe polishing.
What is the best protection for Tesla paint? expand_more
Ceramic coating is the single best investment for a Tesla. It adds a hard protective layer (9H hardness) over the soft factory paint, preventing micro-scratches from daily driving. We recommend at minimum a 1-year ceramic coating for any Tesla, and a 3-5 year coating for owners who plan to keep the vehicle.
Can you detail my Tesla at a Supercharger? expand_more
We can detail your Tesla anywhere — your home, office, or any location with enough space. We bring our own water and power, so no hookups needed. Many clients schedule detailing at home while their Tesla charges overnight.
Does Tesla factory of origin affect paint quality? expand_more
Yes. Fremont-built Teslas (VIN starting with 5YJ) typically have thinner paint (80–90 microns) than Austin-built vehicles (VIN starting with 7SA, typically 90–105 microns). Shanghai-built Model 3s fall in between. We check VIN prefixes before any correction work to calibrate our approach to the specific factory’s paint thickness.
Can you remove Tesla orange peel? expand_more
Yes, through wet sanding — but it’s a high-risk procedure on Tesla’s thin paint. We measure every panel first and will only wet-sand panels with sufficient clearcoat depth (minimum 85+ microns remaining). Some panels may not have enough material for safe orange peel removal. We are transparent about what is achievable on each specific vehicle.
How often should I wash my Tesla in San Diego? expand_more
Every 2 weeks minimum. Tesla’s soft paint lets contaminants bond faster than harder paints. If you park near the coast (La Jolla, Pacific Beach, Coronado), weekly washing is ideal. If your Tesla has ceramic coating, a bi-weekly maintenance wash is sufficient — the coating prevents salt and minerals from bonding between washes.
